Merchant-Ivory is a film-making team comprising Ismail Merchant (producer), James Ivory (director) and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (screenwriter), known particularly for historical dramas. Having first emerged in India, the partnership gained wider audiences with the British film The Europeans (1979), which set the tone for future projects. Further adaptations followed, particularly of works by E.M. Forster: Maurice (1987), A Room With a View (1985) and Howard’s End (1992). This last, with its attention to detail, visual beauty, strong performances and tempered themes of class conflict and sexual identity, exemplifies the Merchant-Ivory style. While commercial and artistic success was sustained with The Remains of the Day (1993), the team has been criticized for lack of experimentation and for offering unchallenging interpretations of respected texts.
